Wright turns down principal's job

The rumors have been circulating for about a month that recently re-elected Board of Education Trustee Phyllis Wright would fill the vacancy left by Leanna Richardson's resignation. Wright previously held the principal's job at Davison. A glance at the evening's agenda showed item "D" -- the appointment of an administrator.
During a break in the awards presentation, Wright respectfully asked Board President Karen Aker if she might speak. Speaking clearly and succinctly into the microphone, Wright told the audience that she had in fact been offered the position of principal at a very lucrative salary.
"I have a commitment to the Malverne School District, and that has never been about money," said Wright. "My responsibility is to continue the high quality of education for our children, and that can better be done as a member of the Board of Education. I respectfully decline."
Wright then asked that item "D" be removed from the agenda. Aker called for a break in the proceedings, and Wright was immediately embraced by those in attendance.
"This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made," she said.
Colleagues and parents were surprised and disappointed by Wright's decision, but supportive as well. "I love Phyllis," said her former secretary, Doris Scherr. "But Phyllis has to do what is right for the community."
Wright admitted that she was prepared to take the position until 10 minutes before the start of meeting. She had a sudden change of heart, which she said she's not yet willing to discuss. As Wright received hugs of support from friends and colleagues, she assured all that she was not going anywhere, and that her commitment to the children of Malverne was stronger than ever.
