Gansalves presented Carmine Cello, Otto Jensen and George Becker with medallions for their part in the battles of Saipan and Tinian. The distinctive honor was also bestowed to veterans from VFW Post 3457, Saipan, Mariana Islands in commemoration of the 60th Anniversity of W.W.II.
The medallions were engraved with the Official Seal of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands on one side while the other side consisted of the 60th Commemoration with honor guard, names and years of the battles of Saipan and Tinian. The years of battles later fought in Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the air campaign which was supported from the airfields of Saipan and Tinian were also engraved on the medallions.
Gonsalves said, ³The heroic services of these veterans should not go unnoticed or be diminished. I am proud to have met with these brave men and given them the recognition they deserve.²
