For the first time in school history, the East Meadow Lady Jets captured the Nassau County Class A field hockey championship.
The second-seeded Lady Jets capped off a thrilling postseason run by ousting top-seeded Massapequa 2-1 in overtime of the championship game on Nov. 2 at Adelphi. Maria Minutoli scored the winning goal in sudden-death overtime, after the Lady Jets tied the game in the second half with a goal by Kristina Curry. Goalie Alex Simonoff made five saves, and Tracy Rivas assisted on Minutoli's game-winning goal.
It was the second straight overtime victory for the Lady Jets, who toppled Baldwin 1-0 in the semifinals on Oct. 29. Curry broke the scoreless tie with the winning goal in overtime. Simonoff had four saves.
The Lady Jets, coached by Danielle Roseneau, faced Ward Melville, the Suffolk County Class A champions, for the Long Island title on Nov. 5 at Adelphi and came up short, falling 6-0.
