Franklin Hospital Medical Center's Pre-Med Internship Summer Scientific Work Program offers an opportunity for undergraduate college students to decide whether or not a career as a physician is right for them. The five-week program gives participants an opportunity to observe and learn more about the medical field by rotating through various departments, including the OR, Emergency Department, Radiology and Lab. Daily lectures by Franklin physicians from various specialties give students a first-hand look at the practice of medicine. Some doctors are always willing to spend extra time with students, providing a unique opportunity for them to learn about all aspects of a doctor's life.

Franklin receives ACR accreditation

Franklin Hospital Medical Center in Valley Stream has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in CAT Scan (Computerized Axial Tomography) as a result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology. The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standard after a peer-review evaluation of its practices. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their finding of the ACR's Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report. The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists and medical physicists with programs for focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.Franklin's Radiology Department provides a wide range of diagnostic imaging services to the community on both an in-patient and outpatient basis.

Ambulatory Mental Health Services at NUMC

The Ambulatory Mental Health Services at Nassau University Medical Center has a mature adult psychotherapy group that meets weekly. The group, led by a psychologist, is for seniors enrolled in the clinic who have depression or anxiety. The group focuses on building emotionally supportive connections between seniors. Coping strategies to help mitigate psychological problems in the elderly are also emphasized. The department also provides a range of outpatient psychiatric (medication) and psychological intervention for seniors with mental health concerns. While most of the aging population does not require the formal attention of a psychiatrist, some seniors do greatly benefit from an in-depth psychiatric assessment.
