'Zero tolerance'

At a public forum last week, School Principal Susan Knors told parents that a number of precautionary measures were being implemented, among them the barring of electronic devices.
"When students choose to display or use Walkmens, radios, electronic games, CD players, BlackBerrys, beepers, PDAs, and more commonly, cell phones and iPods, parents will be asked to pick them up and suspensions will be issued," Knors said, adding that violation of school rules and regulations would not be tolerated.
Knors also said there will be a "zero tolerance" policy for violation of the school code of behavior.
"This will mean that when students choose to violate the school code of behavior, parents will be called upon to pick them up and suspensions will be issued," she said. "When students choose to be in the halls, cafeterias or commons instead of scheduled classes, when they choose to be insubordinate and refuse to respond to any request or directive from adults in the building, when they choose to demonstrate disruptive or violent behaviors, parents will be called to pick them up and suspensions will be issued."
Future considerations that the school is looking into to prevent more incidents and boost safety include grade assemblies, leadership counsel forums, enhancements to the school's existing surveillance and security practices, as well as increased recognition of good citizenship and academic success, among other measures, Knors said.
"I believe that Baldwin High School is an award winning high school with numerous academic and other accolades," she told parents. "You have always been supportive and I am asking for your continued support. We cannot let the inappropriate behavior of a very small number of students tarnish our fine reputation."
