The City Council was slated to terminate their contract with Press at Tuesday night's meeting, but the resolution was rescinded when Press resigned.
Charles T. Theofan, the city's new corporation counsel, began work Jan. 12, and one of the terms of his employment was he would take over much of the work being performed by costly outside counsel. He will be paid $118,000 per year, as opposed to the $92,700 salary his predecessor, William Holst, earned.
"Part of our negotiations involved Mr. Theofan taking on the work of some of our outside counsel," said city manager Harold Porr III. "With this arrangement we were able to enhance his compensation and still achieve a cost-saving for the city."
The city was paying Press $32,000 per year for his services.
"Mr. Press served the city wonderfully," Porr said. "I give the highest accolades to the work he did for us, and thank him for his service."
The Zoning Board of Appeals meets again Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. in the sixth-floor meeting room of City Hall, 1 W. Chester St. Leading the agenda is an application by King's Pharmacy to expand its West End location at 1054 W. Beech St. The building is currently 2,700 square-feet, and the application calls for a 900 square-foot expansion.
The expansion would go backwards, away from the street, but would take away the only off-street parking space, which is reserved for employees.
