Zwanger-Pesiri: still expanding

Village resident is leading growth of radiology firm

Everyone on Long Island knows Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology. With 17 locations across Nassau and Suffolk, it’s pretty hard not to.

Over the years, Zwanger-Pesiri has grown into one of the largest private radiology firms in the country, all under the leadership of longtime Rockville Centre resident Dr. Steven Mendelsohn, the company’s CEO.

Mendelsohn, who lived in Rockville Center for more than 30 years, took over for Drs. Jerome Zwanger and E.J. Pesiri, who founded the company in 1958, in 1992. The same year, he was also made the Chairman of the radiology department at North Shore University Hospital, a position he held until 2002.

Mendelsohn attended Penn State-Thomas Jefferson University and earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1979. He first joined Zwanger-Pesiri as a staff radiologist in 1983.

“My interest in science and my enjoyment with interacting with people drew me into the medical field,” he said. “What attracted me the most about radiology is that it involved every aspect of medicine: from pediatrics to neurology to orthopedics to cardiology to nephrology and gastroenterology.”

Since Mendelsohn took over, the company has grown from three offices to 17, with more on the way. Just a few weeks ago, Zwanger-Pesiri opened a brand new, state-of-the-art facility in Lynbrook.

“Our Lynbrook office has the first outpatient MRI/PET unit in the United States,” Mendelsohn said. He explained that, up to now, patients would normally get scans with at PET/CT machine. “The beauty of the MRI/PET is that there is significantly less potentially harmful radiation. Each patient will receive between 100 and 250 chest x-rays worth of radiation less than they would have received if they had undergone a PET/CT scan.”

Zwanger-Pesiri also has two more buildings under construction: one on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown and one on Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park. The Deer Park building should be opening soon, and the Levittown building, which is identical to the Lynbrook office, is scheduled to open in the summer of 2015.
