The Valley Stream Kiwanis Club donated its fourth pediatric trauma kit to a local school through a partnership with Monica Village. Willow Road School in District 13 was the recipient.

Several weeks ago, I ran a two-part series on bullying and what schools are trying to do to deal with this growing problem. Shortly after, I caught the last few minutes of a TV interview with John Halligan, whose son Ryan was a victim of bullying and ultimately committed suicide. It was a riveting, heart-wrenching, and eye-opening talk. I wanted to share his story with my readers with a firsthand account of what occurred and tried to track John down via the Internet.

The Central High School District’s administrators are recommending few capital projects to the Board of Education for inclusion in the 2010-11 budget, primarily because of the unknown status of state aid. The proposed projects total $206,000 in repairs at its four schools.

Valley Stream District 13 was the last of the four Valley Stream school districts to be audited by the New York state comptroller’s office. And although no fraud or misuse of funds was uncovered, the report did make several recommendations to strengthen financial controls.

District 24 can now boast a nationally recognized art teacher, with Jane Berzner honored by the National Art Educators Association. Berzner is the 2010 elementary art educator of the year for the Eastern Region which stretches from Virginia to Maine and includes part of Canada.
