In what is becoming an increasingly bitter, partisan battle, Nassau County Legislator Ed Mangano, a Republican, is challenging incumbent Democrat Thomas Suozzi for the county executive’s seat.
The race appears to boil down to three key issues: property taxes, a recently imposed 2.5 percent energy tax and the county’s troubled property-tax assessment system.
Mangano is challenging Suozzi’s handling of all three issues, while Suozzi fires back that the county has consistently balanced its budget while improving its bond rating, which reduces the interest the county must pay when it bonds money for any number of projects.

Eighty years ago, Curtiss Airfield opened its runways for some of the greatest pilots of the last century to take flight. Last Saturday, about 50 people braved the cold at the site of the former airport — where the Green Acres mall now sits — to witness the unveiling of the historical landmarker in front of Home Depot.

Football took over Firemen’s Field on Oct. 4 as the Green Hornets youth league held its annual Homecoming celebration. There was a sea of green and white in the stands as hundreds came to cheer the players.

About 65 eighth-graders came down to Memorial Junior High School on Oct. 3 to undergo a free echocardiogram screening, courtesy of the Jason F. Gruen Research Foundation. The testing was performed by Dr. Fred Bierman, chief pediatric cardiologist for Schneider’s Children’s Hospital.
