Sister Lynn Caton, a pastoral associate in charge of social ministries at Sacred Heart Parish in North Merrick, began a garden for the first time this summer. It’s a small patch of greenery under her office window, with a handful of bushy tomato plants and soaring sunflowers. There’s also a bird feeder and a clear-plastic cross. She calls it her little “corner of heaven.”

Despite losing one night to rain, organizers of Blessed Sacrament Church’s Family Festival say the third annual event was a success. The festival, which featured rides, games, entertainment, food and more, was held last Friday through Sunday along McKeon Avenue and in the church parking lot.

Blessed Sacrament Church is in need of a little TLC. A leaky roof, a deteriorating façade and a failing air conditioning system are just some of the problems at the complex. The parish, coping with a multimillion-dollar debt, doesn’t have the means to pay for the repairs, but it will if a capital campaign project to raise $850,000 is successful.
