The Republican Party, according to historians, was created in 1875. Its founders called it the Gallant Old Party, and it eventually got the nickname GOP. Around the same time, the party adopted the elephant as its symbol.

Families welcomed the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to its temporary home at Nassau Coliseum on Monday, March 15. Kids enjoyed circus-related activities while waiting for the elephants to parade by Long Island Children's Museum, which hosted the event along with Herald Community Newspapers.
