Beyond books: 3 free resources at the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library

Posted

The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library has plenty of resources that go beyond borrowing books. From free passes to museums and cultural attractions to 5G Wi-Fi hotspots and career tools, the library offers services that can be useful for families, students, job seekers and anyone looking for something new to do in and around Valley Stream.

  1. Your library card can get you into museums for free

A Valley Stream library card can open the door to more than books. The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library offers free family passes to a variety of museums and cultural attractions. The list includes the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium, Heckscher Museum of Art, Long Island Children’s Museum, New York Hall of Science, New York Transit Museum, Old Westbury Gardens, Planting Fields and Vanderbilt Museum & Planetarium. Some passes cover adults and children, while others have specific limits. The library recommends checking with the Adult Reference Desk for current availability and reservation information.

  2. You can borrow a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot

The library has upgraded its mobile hotspot lending program with MiFi X PRO 5G hotspots, giving Valley Stream library cardholders a convenient way to stay connected on the go. The hotspots can be borrowed for 14 days and support up to 32 Wi-Fi-enabled devices at once, including phones, tablets and laptops. The devices can help cardholders stay online during internet outages, while traveling or in places where reliable service is difficult to find. There is no charge to borrow a hotspot, making the program a useful option for work, school or everyday internet needs. Overdue hotspots carry a $5 daily late fee and a $100 replacement fee if they are more than 10 days overdue.

  3. The library has resources for your next job, test or skill

The library has several online tools designed to help people with work, school and professional development. Job seekers can use JobNow for resume help, career assessments, interview preparation and personalized feedback from a live job coach. The library also offers Career Cruising, which provides career information, occupational profiles and college resources, as well as free access to Cypress Resume for creating a professional resume. For students and professionals preparing for exams, the library offers Mometrix Test Preparation, with study guides, flashcards and practice questions for exams including the Praxis, GRE, ATI TEAS, NCLEX, HESI, SAT, MCAT and GMAT.
