Kathy Deitch, a performer whose Broadway credits include the original companies of “Wicked” and “Footloose,” and whose film and television work includes Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day” and a recurring role on “Law & Order,” recently visited Central High School to lead a hands-on audition workshop for Valley Stream Central High School District performing arts students.
Deitch walked students through practical audition techniques, including how to enter an audition space with confidence, communicate effectively, recover from mistakes and let their individuality come through in their work.
Students applied tips on preparation, presentation and performance in real time, with several performing individually for Deitch and receiving personalized feedback. The workshop came as students prepared to audition for the district’s fall musical.
Deitch has led audition workshops for young performers around the country, working with students through programs at Wagner College, UCLA, Pace University and the University of Hartford.
“What made this experience meaningful was watching our students see how many elements come together to create a strong performance,” said Monique Retzlaff, district director of fine and performing arts. “Kathy worked with them on preparation, presence, intention and how they communicate what they are singing. It gave our students a different lens through which to look at their own performance.”
The workshop was organized by Performing Arts Lead Teacher Kristin Martine as part of the district’s ongoing effort to connect students with working professionals in the arts.
