Cheers, claps, and cereal-themed banners were on display during South High School’s Homecoming festivities on Oct. 2, which culminated with an early afternoon parade and football game. With hundreds in the crowd, the royal court was announced and players strutted their stuff before the West Hempstead High School Rams defeated the Falcons 41-20.

There was nothing but excitement in the air on the warm fall day. Many players, cheerleaders, students and residents were pumped up with pride, including senior Luke Negrino.

“This is my fourth year at Homecoming,” Negrino said. “I look forward to the Falcons winning.”

Negrino, along with other students and teens, were happy to be out and about to support their team. And the happiness seemed contagious with the many smiles seen far and wide, which Diane Winter, vice president of the South High School Parents Club, was very pleased. “I love winning football, seeing cheerleaders, and seeing all the kids having fun,” she said.

In addition, much was alive and well off to the sidelines. Members of the Parents Club, who sponsored the event, helped serve candy and food, and sold South High School sweatshirts. And even with the luscious smells of barbecue, many watched the parade, which featured each of the senior athletes marching with their family across the field.

“I love the game,” said senior Falcons offensive and defensive lineman Luis Jaco, who is in his second year on the varsity team. “I like to see the camaraderie and the students come together.”

And Kim Muller, a ninth grade varsity cheerleader, agreed with Jaco. “I enjoy the event,” she said. “It is really fun. I look forward to tumbling and dancing on the sidelines.

With red and white pom-poms waving in the air, cheers rose to the sky. Each grade presented a banner in support of the Falcons, which were ridden with some funny characters from popular cereal boxes. Characters like the leprechaun from Lucky Charms or Tony the Tiger of the Frosted Flakes boxes were pictures shouting playful phrases like “Falcons – We’re more than good…we’re Gr-r-reat!”
