Valley Stream firefighters responded to a call from a 10-year-old girl that her family's kitchen was on fire at on East Hawthorne Avenue early Monday morning.

“She definitely saved her family … She actually gave a very descriptive description of what was going on,” said Gene O’Brien, second assistant fire chief.

O’Brien said the girl woke her mother up and noticed smoke coming from the kitchen.

When firefighters arrived shortly after 6:30 a.m., the kitchen at the back of the house was fully involved in fire. Firefighters were able to douse the blaze before it spread to the rest of the two-story home. At press time, the cause of the fire was undetermined, but was deemed “not suspicious.” No injuries were reported.
