Nearly 200 community members gathered at VFW Post 1790 in Valley Stream for Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages and Nassau County Legislator Carrie Solages’ annual Haitian Heritage Month Celebration.

The May 22 event concluded the celebratory month with an evening dedicated to recognizing Haitian culture, community leadership and heritage.

“Haitian Heritage Month is a chance to celebrate the people, traditions and values that continue to shape our communities,” Assemblywoman Solages said. “As the daughter of Haitian immigrants, it is always special to come together with friends, neighbors and community leaders to recognize the culture that has given so much to New York and to our district.”

The annual celebration featured music, food and fellowship while highlighting Haitian culture and heritage both locally and around the world.

During the celebration, organizers recognized three Haitian community members for their contributions and service: Peter Pouchon, Naama Francois and Joshua Joseph.

Throughout the evening, organizers also shared information about resources available to Haitian families, including assistance related to Temporary Protected Status, asylum and humanitarian parole applications.
