The 2026-27 school year got under way in Valley Stream school district 13 on Sept. 2.
Teachers greeted returning students at the door, and corridors quickly grew loud as classmates caught up with each other, traded summer stories and became acquainted with their teachers for the year.
“There's nothing quite like the energy of the first day of school,” Superintendent Judith LaRocca, in a news release. “Seeing our students return ready to learn and grow together is a reminder of why this work matters, and we're looking forward to a wonderful year ahead.”
Many classes focused on games and group activities that encouraged students to become comfortable, connect with their classmates and establish relationships before beginning the academic year.
