K-Fit Boutique Gym will once again put endurance and community spirit to the test this weekend as members and supporters take part in the David Goggins 4x4x48 Challenge to raise money for a Long Island animal rescue organization.
The fundraiser will run from June 5 through June 7, with all proceeds benefiting Strong Paws Rescue, a nonprofit that provides care, shelter and rehabilitation for abandoned, neglected and at-risk dogs.
The challenge requires participants to run or walk 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 consecutive hours. Activities will begin June 5 at 4 p.m. and conclude Sunday with a final lap and celebration at noon.
This year marks the fourth time K-Fit has hosted the event. In previous years, the Valley Stream gym partnered with Mission 22, an organization that supports veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder and works to prevent veteran suicide. Through past challenges, participants, donors and community supporters have helped raise as much as $6,000 during a single weekend.
Gym owner Karina Melo said the event reflects K-Fit’s broader mission of using fitness and community involvement to support meaningful causes.
“K-Fit has always stood for something bigger than workouts,” Melo said. “We’re a women’s-only space where strength shows up in every form, physical, mental, emotional. The 4x4x48 was the perfect way to take everything our gym represents and use it to make a real impact in the world. 11 years of building this community led us right to this moment.”
Melo described the event as one of the most emotional experiences for the gym community, particularly when participants complete the full 48-hour challenge. She noted that many participants are everyday women balancing family, careers and other responsibilities while committing to the demanding schedule.
This year’s beneficiary has a personal connection to Melo. Before opening K-Fit, she worked as a veterinary nurse. She said supporting Strong Paws Rescue offered an opportunity to focus on a cause close to her heart while helping animals on Long Island that have been abandoned or neglected.
“They do life-changing work for animals who have been abandoned or neglected, and our K-Fit community was ready to run for them,” Melo said. “Our mission has always been to empower women to use their strength for good, and that’s exactly what this weekend is about.”
K-Fit has built its reputation around creating a supportive environment for women of all ages and fitness levels. The challenge showcases community spirit through members encouraging one another throughout the weekend, as well as families and local residents who come out to support participants.
“You don’t have to be a runner or a member of K-Fit to be part of this,” Melo said. “Walk one lap with us. Cheer from the sidelines. Donate five dollars. Our doors are open this weekend, the same way they have been for the last 11 years in Valley Stream, to anyone who wants to be part of something meaningful. That’s the K-Fit way.”
