Fresh off a dominant Nassau County indoor championship during the winter season, the Valley Stream North boys’ track and field team carried that momentum into the spring by overwhelming the field at the Section 8 Class A championship meet.
The Spartans posted a whopping 237 points at North Shore High School on May 21, 164 clear of runner-up Valley Stream South while producing eight individual county champions and 21 All-County performers.
VSN coach Mike Frazer, now in his 29th season leading the program, said the Spartans’ depth and versatility made this squad one of the best teams he has ever coached.
“It has to be one of the best teams we’ve ever had, for sure,” Frazer said. “To be honest with you, the team that we had that the season got canceled in Covid could have been the best one we’ve ever had, and they never got a chance to go. But I think this team here would have given them a good run.”
The Spartans dominated the field events, winning all six competitions and sweeping the podium in three of them. North’s shot putters also claimed the top four spots in that event.
Senior Vincent Rienzie led the way with county titles in both the long jump and triple jump. He won the long jump at 20 feet, 5 inches on his fifth attempt after fouling on his previous try and captured the triple jump with a leap of 43-1.25.
“Vincent was really comfortable,” Frazer said. “By the time he got to the third and fourth jump in the long and the triple, he was really on fire.”
Junior Jeremiah Thomas added a high jump championship with a personal-best clearance of 6-2, while Michael Muoio won the pole vault at 14 feet. Fellow senior Albert Strojan captured the shot put with a throw of 45-4 and junior Michael Omojola earned the discus title at 132-9.
On the track, junior Dominick Rios won the 400-meter hurdles in 59.68 seconds and the 110 hurdles in 14.99. The Spartans also swept the top three spots in the 400 hurdles, with sophomore Sebastian Madruga second in 59.69 and senior Jack Dusel third in 59.81.
“Dominick is one of the best in New York State right now in the 400 hurdles,” Frazer said. “I think what that did was kind of inspire our guys because they were closer to Dom than they thought they should be.”
Senior Satveer Thind captured the 800-meter run in 2:01.58, edging teammate Evan Truong by seven hundredths of a second in one of the day’s closest finishes. Kyle Farina, a freshman, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:26.67, narrowly holding off Seaford’s Michael Spinella at the finish line.
The county championship continued a remarkable stretch for Valley Stream North, which also won Nassau titles in cross country and winter track during the 2025-26 school year as the Spartans now prepare for the state qualifier at Syosset High School from June 4-5.
