Valley Stream remains among the hardest hit neighborhoods in Nassau County by the Covid-19 strain of coronavirus, with 809 confirmed positive cases as of April 13, according to county Department of Health records. Only Hempstead, with 880 confirmed cases, has more.

The statistics come from the county Department of Health’s interactive Covid-19 map, which tracks the number of confirmed cases by neighborhood. Valley Stream’s cases are spread over three areas, with 70 in South Valley Stream, 467 in Central Valley Stream and 272 in North Valley Stream. The map does not include cases pending confirmation by the New York State Department of Health.

The news comes as the county reports a total of 24,358 positive Covid-19 cases since the outbreak began in early March, with 2,464 Covid-19 related hospitalizations and 910 deaths attributed to the virus. So far, 145 people countywide have been discharged after having been hospitalized.

On the same day, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced there were signs that the number of new coronavirus cases was leveling off, and that talks had begun to reopen the economies of New York and neighboring states initially shut down to slow the spread of infection.

“New York believes we have reached a plateau” of new coronavirus cases, Cuomo said. “This is relatively good news in a world of bad options.”

In addition to New York, the states reportedly involved in the talks are Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
