Things to do for Halloween in Valley Stream: Family fun, pumpkin painting and more

Posted

Halloween is almost here, and Valley Stream has plenty of ways to celebrate. Families can spend the day painting pumpkins and showing off costumes, dog owners can dress up their four-legged friends, and residents looking for a scare can check out a local Halloween display. Here are three ways to get into the Halloween spirit around town.

  1. Spend the day at Halloween Family Fun Day

Families looking for a fun way to celebrate Halloween can head to A.J. Hendrickson Park on Saturday, Oct. 17, for the village’s Halloween Family Fun Day. The event, held behind the pool, will feature a bouncy house, costumed characters, a DJ, giveaways and activities for children. The morning will begin with a sensory-friendly event from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by pumpkin painting from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pumpkins, paint and craft materials will be provided, but families must register in advance by calling (516) 872-6003. Children can also show off their Halloween creativity during a costume contest from 2 to 2:30 p.m., with prizes for the most creative and scariest pumpkins and costumes. The fun continues that evening with a screening of “The Addams Family” at Barrett Park. Gates open at 5 p.m., and the movie begins at 7 p.m. Families should bring chairs and blankets. The rain date is Oct. 24.

  1. Dress up your dog for the Howl-O-Ween parade

Halloween costumes aren’t just for kids. Friends of Valley Stream Dog Park is inviting residents and their furry companions to its annual Howl-O-Ween Costume Parade and Contest on Saturday, Oct. 24, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Valley Stream Dog Park. The free event gives dogs a chance to strut their stuff in their best Halloween outfits, whether they’re dressed to scare, make people laugh or simply look adorable. There will be several categories, including cutest, scariest, funniest and most original costume, as well as best combo costume for owners and their pets.

First- and second-place prizes will be awarded, giving participants another reason to get creative with their pets’ looks. For dog owners who enjoy including their pets in holiday celebrations, the parade is a chance to meet other local pet lovers and enjoy some Halloween fun together.

  1. Check out the spooky Myers House display

For those who prefer their Halloween celebrations with a little more fright, the Myers House at 108 Albermarle Ave. offers a local display worth checking out. Listed on FrightMaps, the home features a 100-foot-wide front yard filled with Halloween decorations, including towering monsters reaching 12 feet tall and other spooky figures standing 7 to 8 feet tall. Photos of the property show a skull-covered archway, stacks of glowing jack-o’-lanterns and costumed figures arranged throughout the yard. And for fans of scary movies, there’s an extra reason to stop by. According to the listing, a Michael Myers actor is expected to appear during Halloween weekend and on Halloween itself. The display gives residents another way to enjoy the season without leaving Valle
