Approximately one year ago this week the South Nassau Christian Church in Baldwin had no floors. The modest building, which serves about 100 worshippers each Sunday, also lost its stage, tiles, piano and all its furniture to Hurricane Sandy flooding. An army of fans and dehumidifiers blew through the building non-stop in an effort to combat mold, even as the church’s lead pastor, Scott Solimine, only five weeks into his tenure, struggled to help his neighbors.

You may have seen my 42-year-old husband Jason, or someone else like him, cruising down the street on his skateboard. Or perhaps you’ve spotted him at the local skate park, skating and joking around with kids who are less than half his age. He is graying at the temples, and may have a bit of a paunch. He likely has a desk job, wears a suit and tie during the week and has a couple of kids and a mortgage. On the weekends, however, he whips out his stained, ripped, 30-year-old skater shorts, heads over to his local skate park and returns to a younger version of himself — the dude who first learned how to bomb a hill at age 14.

“For many years, the subject of my art has been art itself,” said Adel Gorgy, a Baldwin Harbor artist whose work will be exhibited at the Bay Area Friends of the Fine Arts gallery in Sayville (www.baffa.org) from Oct. 12 to 27. Gorgy’s solo show, “Abstracting Abstraction — Traces of Pollock, de Kooning and Warhol,” merges the conceptual with the visual, as the artist uses his camera to explore the works of abstract artists in ways that redefine the originals while adding their own distinct viewpoint.
