Julian’s Light, a growing nonprofit organization based in the Bronx, recently held a month-long basketball tournament at Coes Neck Park in northern Baldwin. The group, which Recreation Coordinator Fred Lopez said aims to “keep youth off the street and focused on positive and productive activities,” was founded in 2008 in honor of Julian Feliciano, a 13-year-old bystander who was killed during a street brawl in 2003. more

After 16 years, Catherine Overton, Director of the Baldwin Public Library, is leaving. Overton will take over at the Rockville Centre library, but says she will always remember her time in Baldwin with a smile. “I’ve had an amazing time at the Baldwin Library,” Overton said last week. “It’s a wonderful community and I had a great staff and a supportive Board. I’m going to miss everyone.” more
John P. McCloy, known to his friends as Jack, is out of the race for the 5th Legislative District seat that longtime Legislator Joe Scannell will not seek to retain when his term expires. McCloy’s ouster leaves Baldwin school board Trustee Laura Curran unopposed on the Democratic ticket. She will face off against Republican challenger Debbie Pugliese, a member of the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors, in the general election in November. more

Baldwinpalooza, the concert that assembled local talent for an all-day performance to benefit Baldwin schools last weekend, raised more than $20,000 — a figure that may increase as additional vendors turn in their percentages.
