A large cormorant had the misfortune to swallow a fish hook and a length of line recently and ended up dangling above the water in Silver Lake Park. The Baldwin Fire Department was summoned, and Lt. Sean Randazzo and firefighter Tom Ryley went out over the lake in a cherry picker to free the bird.

An unusual call brought the Baldwin Fire Department’s Ladder 2 out to Silver Lake Park, off Fox Hurst Road, recently. The problem? A local cormorant swallowed a fish hook and the line attached to it and ended up hanging helpless from a tree. more

Baldwin4children, a community group seeking to raise $321,000 in private donations over the next year to endow a variety of educational programs in Baldwin, has scheduled a wide range of fundraisers. The group, which catalogs its activities at the website baldwin4children.org, was formed in reaction to the lean 2013-14 Baldwin school budget, which will leave many sports and arts programs unfunded. more
