In the four Bellmore-Merrick elementary districts, every grade from third to sixth surpassed the average county and state scores on the English Language Arts and math state exams, the results of which were released by the New York State Department of Education last week. School superintendents expressed satisfaction with the results, but also cautioned that their districts will need to continue to work hard to prepare students for future statewide exams, which since 2010 have included longer, more difficult problems. more
Drivers on Merrick Avenue in North Merrick may have noticed that a large construction project is under way at Camp Avenue Elementary School. The work is part of a $1.2 million capital project that was approved by North Merrick voters last December. Of that money, $552,000 was slated for exterior repairs at the Camp Avenue and Old Mill Road schools. more

As if straight out of a television commercial, a young camper asked New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford the question — “Since you’ve just won the Super Bowl, what are you going to do next?” No, he did not say, “I’m going to Disney World.” Instead, Weatherford smiled and said, “I’m going to Coleman Country Day Camp.” The response evoked raucous applause from the hundreds of Coleman Country Day campers who looked on in awe at the recent Super Bowl champion. more
Elementary school students from six Merrick schools — Birch, Levy-Lakeside, Chatterton, Old Mill Road, Fayette and the Progressive School of Long Island — recently participated in a Scrabble tournament at the Merrick Library. The tournament is run annually by the Kiwanis Club of Merrick. more
