Though donations may be down a bit, spirits are running high at several church outreach programs with volunteers lending a helping hand to give out large amounts of food this holiday season.

Students at the Sacred Heart School in North Merrick pulled out all the stops to feed the hungry this Thanksgiving. Beside their normal collection of food items and monetary donations for the Sacred Heart food pantry, the students held a bake sale on Nov. 22 and a "$5 Soup Lunch" on Nov. 23, with all proceeds benefiting the Sacred Heart pantry.

The sun may be shining a little brighter around the Bethlehem Assembly of God Church on East Fairview Avenue lately. The church’s senior pastor, Rev. Steven Milazzo, was honored by the village and Town of Hempstead with a service citation at the House of Hope gala banquet at the Inn in New Hyde Park on Oct. 14.

Over 60 gallons of batter, donated by the Pantry Diner, was turned into the pancakes that 1,200 guests at last week’s Breakfast with Santa’s Helpers event enjoyed. Chefs from the diner also donated their time and talents to feed the crowd that filled the Recreation Center’s lobby for three seatings that morning.

Rockville Centre Cadette Girl Scout Troop 860 ran a Food Drive for Island Harvest on Sept. 20 at King Kullen on Sunrise Highway. The girls collected over 400 pounds of food for an Island Harvest Member Agency, St. Paul AME Church in Rockville Centre, which is starting a food pantry for distribution to Rockville Centre residents.
