The East Rockaway Rocks continued their winning ways with a 62-32 road win over Clarke in a Nassau Conference ABC-VI boys’ basketball game last Friday night. Senior guard Joe Todero scored 13 points, 11 of which came in the first quarter, as the Rocks ran out to a 25-5 lead after eight minutes. Senior Dylan Giliberti led all scorers with 14 points. Todero was 3-or-4 on three-point attempts in the opening quarter. With the win, the first-place Rocks improved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. more
Still smarting from a loss to Oyster Bay in last season’s Nassau Class C final, the Lady Rocks are off to a solid start in 2009-10 and have their eyes on the program’s 10th county title. more
Students from East Rockaway’s Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society attended Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ, recently. The focus of their visit was to provide students with the opportunity to view live neurosurgery from a distant learning center. more
The East Rockaway Fire Department was called to a fire in progress at 200 Main Street Wednesday night. The three residents, one of whom called in the fire, were waiting outside of their home, all safe, when firemen arrived. The firefighters did, however, rescue a mother cat and her three kittens from the second floor of the home. A $2 million grant administered by the county will fund stream improvements in the village this year. Work at Hendrickson Park began in 2008 but was stopped when money ran out. With a new infusion of cash, work will continue on the stream at the north end of Valley Stream’s flagship park. more
