Maureen Beccaris has been an officer in the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Precinct for 26 years, but for the past six months, she said, she came to work every day not knowing where she would be the next week. She explained that her office’s supplies and papers were still in boxes, waiting to be moved to Seaford when the scheduled merger of the 1st and 7th precincts took place.

The Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Precinct, in Baldwin, will remain open for the near future, and possibly for good. Police officials announced on Monday that they were postponing the closure, attributing the revision of their plans to the effects Hurricane Sandy had on the South Shore.

In a departure from plans made by the previous administration, Nassau County lawmakers have agreed to purchase property on Harrison Avenue and Merrick Road for the construction of a new 1st Precinct police station. The acquisition of the parcel — which is across Harrison Avenue from the existing station — puts to rest an earlier idea to lease space in the Rosen Shopping Center on Grand Avenue.
