After more than a year of research, deliberation and community input, the Baldwin Downtown and Commercial Corridor Resiliency Study is complete. The study, which was finished earlier this month, was the culmination of a yearlong process examining ways to encourage new business and residents while maximizing the efficiency of travel corridors (such as Grand Avenue and Merrick Road) and improving the business district’s infrastructure to protect it against future storms like Hurricane Sandy. Baldwin second graders at Brookside Elementary School began their year in science by learning what the soil around their school consists of, and how it varies from place to place. As the year progressed, they learned how soil behaves, how it is formed, and how it supports the native plants and animals they can observe around them. more

The holidays really are most enjoyable at home. Having lived in Japan for one year, it’s wonderful to be back in the Christmas spirit in New York. Nothing better than snuggling up to read a nice book with cocoa on a cold night. Traveling and living abroad has truly given me a much great appreciation of home. more
