Every community needs police officers, teachers, sanitation workers and elected leaders. But every community also needs volunteers, the people whose contributions mean so much yet so often go unnoticed.

There has been a lot of progress made in the rebuilding efforts since Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island in late October, but there is still work to be done. The Long Island Volunteer Center is in need of volunteers to help those impacted by the storm.

The fifth annual volunteer fair last Saturday at the Baldwin Public Library went on as scheduled despite the light snow. The parking lot was packed (as always), and library Trustee Carl Williams said that a couple of cancellations hadn’t put a damper on the affair. “We had a few organizations cancel because of weather,” Williams said, “but the rest of the groups sort of spread out, and we’ve had a really good flow of people.”
