This Halloween, there were no tricks, only treats in Baldwin High School’s fashion classroom!
Students put their creativity and sewing skills to work, crafting 30 handmade stuffed “felt monsters” to bring Halloween cheer to children experiencing homelessness. Now in its fourth year, the annual Halloween tradition has become a meaningful way for Baldwin High School fashion students to share their talents and bring joy to children in need.
Under the guidance of fashion teacher Analisa Giannone, who drew inspiration from her Girl Scout experience to develop the project, students designed and stitched their own unique stuffed monsters for Bethany House. The local nonprofit provides shelter and support services to women and children experiencing homelessness. Through this special initiative, Baldwin High School students hope to bring smiles and comfort to some of the organization’s youngest residents.
While the project gives students the opportunity to practice the hand-stitching techniques and sewing skills they have learned in class, it also reinforces the district’s Future Ready Competencies, known as the six Cs, particularly creativity, civics and character. Students are learning firsthand how their talents can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, transforming an ordinary classroom assignment into a significant act of kindness. By combining technical skills with community service, students are discovering the importance of giving back.
Baldwin High School’s fashion program offers students opportunities to explore their creativity while developing practical skills that can lead to future careers in fashion and design. Throughout the school year, students complete a variety of projects, culminating in a June fashion show where they showcase their talents and creations. For this initiative, however, their designs were intended for a different audience: children who could use some extra happiness this spooky season.
Although the handmade monsters may look a little frightful, the thought behind them is anything but scary.
