Blizzard hits Long Island

Snow drifts, winds howl through our area

Posted

The first blizzard of the season dumped more than a foot of snow in our area Saturday night to Sunday morning, with high winds and heavy, drifting snow accumulating over night.

The Long Island Rail Road reported numerous delays due to snow drifts, icing, and equipment failures.

The snow tapered off late Sunday morning, leaving a blanket of 18 inches in some areas and adding another inch or so of accumulation.

Treacherous condiitions continued as drivers skid on the roads and homeowners shoveled their sidewalks and driveways. White out conditions exist due to strong whipping winds.

Motorists are advised to stay off of the roads unless absolutely necessary, and to drive slowly if they must travel.

According to the Long Island Weather Service, light snow and flurries in Nassau county will produce maybe another inch or so. Snow totals will range from 12 inches to 24 inches. Snow drifts will be as high as 3 to 4 feet. Strong winds around 40 mph this morning to drop to around 20-25 mph.

On Sunday, it was mostly cloudy and breezy with some flurries, and temperatures around 30 degrees.
