For 30 years, members of the Merrick community have been gathering annually for a softball game. It’s not just any regular game though, because the crew has long been raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, also known as JDRF.

John Bartlett's Pet adoption event in NYC

Menswear designer John Bartlett held another pet adoption event at his namesake store at Charles and 7th Ave. South on April 17. In conjunction with North Shore Animal League America, Bartlett hosted the event with hundreds of pet lovers stopping by to ooh and awww -- and to even give some of the cute dogs and cats new, loving homes.

A week after Hurricane Sandy lashed the South Shore with a 10-foot storm surge and hurricane-force wind gusts, Long Island Power Authority officials said on Nov. 5 that the utility had restored power to 675,000 of the 1.2 million customers who lost their electricity in the storm. But the majority of Bellmore-Merrick residents south of Merrick Road were not among those to get their lights back on, even though many, if not most, parts the Bellmores and Merricks north of Merrick Road had electricity.
