I’m 26, and have lived virtually my whole life in Hempstead. I’ve seen a lot of health-related issues — low-income people of color, like me, suffering from chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and untreated mental illness. Often they haven’t been able to receive proper treatment for their conditions. I wanted to do something about it, and soon I will be able to, because I’m on my way to becoming a doctor.

From my experience as a lawyer and as a county legislator since 2022, traffic safety is a topic high on my list of priorities. Rarely a day goes by when we don’t read, see or hear reports of accidents on our roadways, too often with tragic results. For virtually every Long Islander, traffic is a part of our everyday lives. Congestion on our roadways is ever present, and because of that, the safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians should be the first priority for every driver and everyone on foot trying to cross a street.

Congress is responsible for passing annual appropriations to ensure that essential federal government programs remain funded, our national defense remains strong, and our country is able to continue to grow and thrive. This has often come in the form of lengthy pieces of legislation, with top-line spending numbers decided on by the leadership of the majority party, leading to massive spending bills that increased the national deficit. When Republicans won the majority in the House, we made a commitment to do things differently.
