Roughly 200 pedestrians were killed on Long Island streets from 2010 to 2012, according to “The Region’s Most Dangerous Roads for Walking,” a report produced by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a non-profit organization committed to decreasing pedestrian fatalities. Eighty-eight died on Nassau County streets.

Surrounded by police and school officials, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano vowed during a news conference at Chatterton Elementary School in Merrick on Monday to catch the man or men who have approached and frightened Bellmore-Merrick children in recent weeks. In at least once incident, a middle school student reported that a man had attempted to grab him.

Colorful blooms will bring many visitors (actually thousands) to Hofstra University for one the area’s favorite springtime traditions, Hofstra’s Dutch Festival. The festival celebrates its 29th year on Sunday with the glorious tulips that honor the Dutch heritage of founder William S. Hofstra.

For decades, public health officials have hammered home a message –– smoking kills. They have done so in splashy advertising campaigns and in the halls of government. Any number of laws and ordinances prohibiting smoking in public venues have been passed as a result. These efforts, officials say, have paid dividends.
