Once again this winter, snow has blanketed Bellmore-Merrick, making driving conditions hazardous for commuters.
Roads were passable during the morning commute, but snow-covered and slushy. The afternoon commute is expected to be more treacherous, as snow piles up throughout the day. Forecasters expect five to eight inches of heavy, “wet” snow by day’s end.

Schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 22 due to the snowstorm moving through the area. The Merrick, North Merrick and North Bellmore school districts will also be closed Wednesday, Jan. 22.

A federal jury Thursday convicted Michael Costanza, 60, of Merrick, a retired Long Island Rail Road transportation manager and North Merrick Fire Department commissioner, of fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud. Costanza now faces a maximum of 55 years in prison.
