North Bellmore’s Foundation for Academics, Enrichment and Recreation’s eighth summer recently ended, but the program, full of fun and learning, has given participants a lifetime of happy childhood memories.

A North Bellmore Fire Department volunteer was recently arrested and charged with setting fire to a car outside a local home, authorities said.Nassau County Police Department officials said that Matthew Greve, 25, was charged with third-degree arson at his arraignment on July 3. The felony charge stems from a May incident in which he allegedly set another man’s car on fire on purpose.

Bellmore-Merrick’s seniors celebrated their high school experiences while looking forward to the future at commencement exercises for Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham on Sunday. For the third straight year, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District held three separate graduation ceremonies at the NYCB Theater in Westbury, and officials said that each school had about 335 graduates.

At Calhoun High School’s graduation ceremony last Sunday, there was no principal’s address. David Seinfeld gave up his time to a senior who he said continues to inspire the class of 2013, even though his time at Calhoun is over: Dean Brownworth.

After an unprecedented tie in the contest for one seat on the North Bellmore Board of Education forced a runoff election, incumbent JoAnn DeLauter defeated Frank LaMagra in the second vote on June 25. DeLauter won her third term by 173 votes, with 556 votes to LaMagra’s 383. Of the 939 residents who voted in the special election, 87 did so by absentee ballot.

Opportunity knocked for Mepham’s Emily Hagerty in the pentathlon at the State Qualifier Track and Field Meet at Freeport High School on May 28-29, and the junior took full advantage, winning the event by 25 points and qualifying for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships in Middletown this Friday and Saturday.

North Merrick School District Superintendent David Feller will become president of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents on June 1. With the position, he will also assume a spot on the Commissioner’s Advisory Council of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, which meets three to four times a year with the New York State Education Department commissioner, currently Dr. John King Jr.

Robbie’s Run, which commemorates 9-year-old Robbie Levine of Merrick, who died of heart failure in 2005 while rounding the bases during a Little League practice, attracted more than 1,700 participants between the annual event’s 5K, mile- and half-mile races through Merrick streets and fields on Sunday. As part of the festivities, Joseph Rocco, president of the Merrick-North Little League announced that the league was naming its front baseball field at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick as the “Forever 9: Robbie Levine Foundation Field."
