Children at Merrick Woods, a day camp on Merrick Avenue near the Merrick and East Meadow border, took part in a cavalcade of games and competitions last week as part of the camp’s Olympics. I graduated from Lynbrook High School in 2010 and saw great players pass through the halls, cradling lacrosse sticks on their way to class. I remember wearing my friends’ home or away jerseys at big games. I enjoyed Lynbrook Lacrosse Day with the rest of my community. more
A North Bellmore Fire Department volunteer was recently arrested and charged with setting fire to a car outside a local home, authorities said.Nassau County Police Department officials said that Matthew Greve, 25, was charged with third-degree arson at his arraignment on July 3. The felony charge stems from a May incident in which he allegedly set another man’s car on fire on purpose. more
I walked up to Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum on June 19 to find a swarm of locals outlasting the heat, clutching neon signs, and chatting animatedly. The X Factor, a reality singing show that airs on FOX, had offered an exciting opportunity — to be an active part of the viewing audience, or the “fifth judge,” to see live acts on stage and hear some really incredible talent. The Madison Square Garden Company was one four respondents to County Executive Ed Mangano’s Request-for-Proposals last March to redevelop the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. The group, led by president and CEO Hank Ratner, is proposing to renovate the 41-year-old building and build an entertainment district called “Long Island Live!” that would lie adjacent to the arena. more
