In a 3-2 decision last Thursday, New York State Appellate Division judges upheld new boundaries drawn by Nassau Republican lawmakers for the county’s 19 legislative districts. If the state Court of Appeals rules in favor of the Republican plan on Aug. 24, the GOP’s legislative map will reshape a number of districts, including those covering the Five Towns, Elmont, Baldwin and Merrick-Bellmore.

North Bellmore environmental activist Richard Schary was hurrying through the woods behind the Brookside School in North Merrick on Monday morning, dashing from tree to tree in search of graffiti. He had little trouble finding it. Vandals had spray-painted dozens of oak and maple trees along a well-worn path through the forest.

The Nassau County Legislature approved more than $3 million in contracts on Jan. 10 for new equipment and upgrades at the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant, in an effort to end months of illegal sewage discharge into Reynolds Channel, which many residents and local officials have called a serious environmental health hazard.
