A 25-year-old male was struck and killed by an unknown vehicle while he was walking on Babylon Turnpike near Smith Street in Merrick on June 20 at 1:35 a.m., according to detectives with the Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad. The vehicle operator drove off northbound after hitting the young man.

A Shore Road staff member was struck and killed Saturday night when walking at the intersection of Merrick Road and Farmers Avenue. According to police, a seventh precinct police officer was driving eastbound on Merrick Road when he struck Bellmorite Sherry Lang, 63.

Baldwin resident Vertus Vielot, 35, was one of 17 people indicted last week after a two-year investigation into what is being called the largest mortgage and identity theft scheme in Nassau County history. Vielot was charged under New York’s Organized Crime Control Act with 12 counts of second-degree grand larceny, first-degree scheme to defraud and fourth-degree conspiracy, and faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.
