Our guide in Penang, Malaysia, hopped onto our bus, introduced himself and said, “I am Sikh but as you see I do not wear a turban, I love beer and I enjoy spare ribs … I am a great disappointment to my mother.” Of course he got his laugh, but he also made his point. We could expect to be surprised.

Once upon a time (actually it was 1968, but it might as well have been once upon a time), my brand new husband and I traveled to Bermuda for our wedding trip. I wore the standard travel outfit: a dress and matching coat ensemble, white high heels, pastel gloves and a straw hat. My husband wore a sport coat; he carried his two favorite Swiss Army knives in his pocket and a fishing knife in his molded plastic carry-on.

The East Meadow Soccer Club’s U-11 Gold Stars ’99 girls travel team will hold a car wash fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon. Proceeds from the event will go to defray travel and training costs.
