The Sacred Heart Catholic Youth Organization seventh-/eighth-grade girls’ soccer team was the runner-up for the 2013 Nassau County CYO Championship title. The championship game was played at Town Park in Merrick on Sept. 17. Sacred Heart fell to St. Dominic’s of Oyster Bay 2-1 in the match.

Louis Hernandez continues to dominate opponents on the wrestling mat. A junior at Mepham, Hernandez repeated as a Nassau County champion Feb. 12 when he defeated East Meadow’s Mike Tropiano, 22-5, in the 145-pound title bout at Hofstra, leading the Pirates to an impressive third-place finish in the team standings.

Mepham entered the Nassau County Division I Wrestling Championships at Hofstra University looking for its first individual champion since 2005. In a span of roughly 15 minutes last Sunday night, the Pirates had not one, but two wrestlers crowned.

The Calhoun girls’ varsity badminton team recently won the Nassau County Championship with a 4-3 victory over Great Neck South. The Calhoun girls finished the season with a 15-0 record –– and their second straight championship. Team Captain Christina Strezenec won the overall singles title, beating out all other Nassau badminton players in a two-day tournament. With this win, Strezenec became the only player in Calhoun history to win four county titles playing a varsity sport.
