Bagel Plaza in Merrick, opened in 1962 as one of the South Shore’s very first bagel shops, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. It now offers 56 different bagels, bialys, rolls and challahs made from scratch every day. A special feature is that seeds on top of the bagels are also mixed in the dough. more

Bellmore Family Street Fest to kick off Sept. 19

The 27th annual Bellmore Family Street Festival is set to begin on Thursday, Sept. 19. The carnival begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The street fair, which annually attracts more than 100,000 visitors, will start on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Live bands will play Friday night, festival coordinator Martha Verdi said. more

Four model homes are under construction at a 17-acre site on Maple Avenue in North Bellmore that was once a U.S. Army base. The site is to become a new neighborhood featuring a total of 79 homes built by the Beechwood Organization. more

Richner Communications to acquire L&M Publications

Publishers Clifford and Stuart Richner announced July 10 that Richner Communications has agreed to acquire L&M Publications, a Long Island weekly newspaper group that includes the Merrick Life, Bellmore Life, Freeport-Baldwin Leader and the Wantagh-Seaford Citizen. Both Richner Communications and L&M are privately held companies, and terms of the sale were not announced. The sale is expected to close this quarter. more
