The North Bellmore Public Library has a full slate of activities planned for October, with author talks and book discussions, seasonal crafts and baking, and plenty of Halloween fun for children and families. Here are three things to know.
October offers plenty for book lovers
Readers have several opportunities to talk books this month, starting with a visit from international bestselling author Alyson Richman on Oct. 18 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Richman will discuss her latest historical novel, “The Missing Pages,” which was inspired by a real-life legend connected to the Titanic. She will share details about her research and career as an author before answering questions from the audience.
Two book discussions will round out the library’s literary offerings. The Monday Afternoon Book Discussion will feature Laura Hillenbrand’s “Unbroken,” which chronicles the life of Olympian and World War II airman Louis Zamperini, on Oct. 19 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The Evening Book Club will discuss Rachel Khong’s “Real Americans,” a multigenerational novel exploring family, identity, class and inheritance, on Oct. 29 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Get creative with fall crafts and flavors
Adults can celebrate the season with two hands-on programs at the North Bellmore Public Library this October.
Crafts with Corinne returns Oct. 14 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, when participants will create a ghost-and-pumpkin-themed craft. The program costs $5. Registration for North Bellmore library cardholders begins Sept. 23, followed by non-cardholder registration Oct. 7.
Chef Rob will return Oct. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. for an Oktoberfest-inspired German apple cake workshop. Participants will prepare a traditional dessert featuring fresh apples, cinnamon sugar and confectioners’ sugar, then take it home ready to bake.
The workshop costs $5. Registration for North Bellmore library cardholders begins Oct. 1, and non-cardholder registration opens Oct. 15. Participants should bring bowls, a whisk, rubber spatula, 9-inch cake pan and three medium-to-large apples.
Celebrate Halloween at the library
Children can get into the Halloween spirit with two festive programs at the North Bellmore Public Library.
The library will host its Halloween Carnival on Oct. 24 from 10 to 11 a.m. Children of all ages can wear their favorite costumes and enjoy spooky crafts, festive games, prizes and a Halloween-themed photo booth. Registration for North Bellmore library patrons begins Oct. 17, followed by out-of-district registration Oct. 20.
Halloween Hocus Pocus will continue the festivities Oct. 28 from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. Designed for children ages 3 and 4 to attend independently, the program will feature spooky — but not too scary — stories and a seasonal craft. Costumes are encouraged.
Registration for North Bellmore library patrons begins Oct. 22, with out-of-district registration opening Oct. 26. Both programs will take place at the library.
