A bountiful Earth Day at Brookside School

Students in the Meadowbrook Alternative Program and the PREP Academy in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District marked Earth Day by spending time in the sun and planting greenery on April 23.

The students filled garden boxes in the building’s courtyard with different types of lettuce, onions and other harvestable goods. The program will provide fresh produce to the district’s Community Cupboard and shows the students how to grow their own food in a practical manner.

The seasonal additions can be seen from the front of the school, too, as the students planted flowers and other plants at the main entrance of the building.

PREP Academy is a next-level education, recreational and vocational experience for students within the district through age 21. Goals of the academy include social understanding and skills, self-advocacy and developing specific job skills and independent recreational skills.
