Their father, who teaches science research at G.W. Hewlett High School, said he encouraged the boys to take an interest in science at a young age. “My sons spend lots of time working with me,” he said. “They see the successes of my students and aspire for similar outcomes. “

This is not the first time that Tyler received accolades in a science competition. He also took home the spring 2012 grand prize in the Samsung Superhero contest for his depiction of Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, the Dutch scientist who discovered bacteria, protozoa and other organisms using microscopes that he created himself, in a video. He donated his prize –– a SAMCAM 760 document camera, which projects images, and $500 –– to Reinhard.

Last year Tyler also participated in the Hicksville Gregory Museum Annual Science Fair. His research focused on the effects of ingredients in cosmetics and sunscreens on the growth of plants, and he received an honors distinction for his work. Tyler plans to take part in the fair once again on April 26.
