Country comes to Bellmore for a good cause

The Bellmore Knights of Columbus brought a little of the southwestern Plains to Bellmore Avenue when the organization hosted a country-themed fundraiser to benefit victims of the devastating Moore, Okla., tornado on May 20.

Jay Leoni, a member of the Knights, said proceeds from raffle, T-shirt and ticket sales at the Aug. 11 event will be donated to a fund that the Knights have set up to benefit the people of Moore. The tornado killed 23 people, injured 377 and caused widespread structural damage.

Leoni said the people of Moore are still struggling, and the Bellmore Knights wanted to do what they could to help. The afternoon’s menu included roast pig, hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks. Children and adults alike could play games for prizes. And the Southern Exposure Band, which specializes in classic southern rock, entertained attendees.

Long Island businesses sponsored the event, and their names were listed on the back of T-shirts that the Knights had for sale. Local sponsors included Stella’s Pizzeria and Livingston Podiatry Associates.
