Kennedy flies past Hawks

But miss playoffs with loss to Syosset

The Kennedy boys' basketball season might have ended Monday night with a 60-57 loss to Conference AA-III rival Syosset, but the squad certainly didn't go down without a fight.

Kennedy led 33-24 at halftime, but an onslaught of fouls in the second half sent the Braves to the free-throw line to take the game.

Friday night against Planview was a different story. The Cougars came out on top 41-39.

With 38 seconds left on the clock, junior Adrian Rose sunk a shot from outside the three to take the lead and the win.

On senior night, a junior led the team. Guard Joey Karo had 14 points, and senior Brendan Mills was right behind with 12. And while Karo dominated from outside the three, his ball handling skills also prevented Planview's full-court press from forcing turnovers.

"When Joey comes out, the other team wants to press us, and they can't if Joey's in the game," head coach Rory Block said.

Karo knows he's good at handling the ball, but he was quick to point to his teammate Rose's game winner and the seniors.

"We just had to win," he said. "We had to put everything on the floor. It was our last home game. We had to do it for our senior that's been here for five years, Brendan Mills."

But the game was a constant push and pull between the Cougars and Hawks, with the lead changing six times. Zach Amateau led Planview with 20 points and also took advantage of the  Cougars from outside the three. But Kennedy's defense was eventually able to stop the Hawks.

"Defense, finally, after allowing them threes, then we clamped down on them, grabbed the rebounds," Block said. "And then Adrian Rose hit that big three for us, and that won the game. It was a grind, but we came out on top."
