Local Lions clubs spread holiday cheer

Despite cold and stormy conditions, the Bellmore Lions Club held its annual children's holiday party on Dec. 5 at the Brookside School to spread holiday cheer to local families in need. To keep children and parents safe, the event, which in previous years was known as "The Polar Express Holiday Party," was transformed into "Santa's Winter Workshop Walk-Through” for 2020.

Families were guided through an outdoor area where volunteers handed them pre-packaged grab-and-go gifts of toys, winter clothing, books and other surprises. The Lions worked with the Nassau County Department of Social Services, local schools and houses of worships to identify families to invite to the event.

"Although this event may look a bit different this year due to the health and safety regulations in regards to the pandemic, the joy and excitement remains the same for both the children and the volunteers who help," said Bellmorite Nina Lanci, a past district governor of the Nassau County Lions Club. "There is nothing as touching as seeing a child's eyes light up and watch them smile at the sight of the beautiful toys and gifts they receive at this event. For many families that are struggling, especially this year, this event really brings the meaning of the holiday straight to the heart."
