North Bellmore woman pleads guilty to killing husband

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced on Tuesday that a North Bellmore woman has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and other charges for stabbing her ex-husband to death during an argument in November 2011.

Nancy Boland, 57, pleaded guilty to the entire indictment against her, including manslaughter in the first degree, aggravated criminal contempt, criminal contempt in the first degree, three counts of tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, in exchange for a promised sentence of seven years in prison. The DA’s Office recommended a 12-year sentence. She will be sentenced March 13.

Rice said that in the late evening of Nov. 16, 2011, Boland and her ex-husband, Walter Boland, with whom she still lived on Waltoffer Avenue, got into an argument that escalated when she claimed that he threatened her with a sharp-bladed instrument. Nancy Boland said that she grabbed it out his hand and stabbed him with it once in the abdomen, driving it upward and four inches deep.

Nancy Boland, against whom her ex-husband had a valid order of protection, told police that he refused to be taken to the hospital, and that she left him at home to go to work the following day. When she returned home, she found the victim unresponsive. After dressing him and attempting to feed him, she concluded that he was dead, waiting until after dark to then drag his body to her mother’s car. She dumped his body on the Wantagh State Parkway bike path north of Sunrise Highway where it was found by a jogger in the early morning of Nov. 18.

After stabbing the victim, Boland told family, friends and co-workers that he had stormed off after an argument and hadn’t returned. When his body was discovered, Boland told them that she was worried it might be her ex-husband.

“Nancy Boland’s conduct after the killing of her ex-husband proves that this was no accident and not self-defense,” Rice said. “She attempted to cover her tracks by lying to family and friends about her ex-husband’s whereabouts, and then dumped him on the side of the road like a piece of trash.”

Deputy Chief Joseph LaRocca and Assistant District Attorney Jamie Johnson of the Vehicular Crimes Bureau are prosecuting the case for the DA’s Office. Boland is represented by attorney David Besso.
